ChatGPT is moving the "Sources" button out of sight, which means the link a citation earns is worth less and the name in the answer is worth more.

OpenAI is making ChatGPT's sources harder to find

Glenn Gabe spotted it on X and Barry Schwartz wrote it up this morning. The "Sources" button that used to sit in the footer of a ChatGPT response is now, at least sometimes, tucked inside the three-dot "More actions" menu, so a reader has to click twice to reach the side panel that lists the sources. Gabe's words: "That can definitely decrease visibility and clicks for citations that show up in the right-side panel."

Judge it honestly. This is tier 5. One practitioner's observation, no OpenAI announcement, and Schwartz himself does not know whether it is a test or a rollout. Treat it as a signal about direction rather than a fact about the product.

Google's AI Overviews for local results are citing self-promoting listicles

Joy Hawkins posted an example on X: for a list of law firms, Google's AI Overview quoted one lawyer's own self-promotional listicle as the primary source for every firm on the list, and linked to that listicle instead of the firms' own websites. Schwartz replicated it after several attempts across a few browsers. Also tier 5, but replicated by a second party, which is more than most of this category manages.

Google amended its scraping lawsuit against SerpApi, this time around licensed content

Chief Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers dismissed both of Google's DMCA claims on 20 July 2026, finding Google had not shown it held copyright-owner authorisation to deploy its anti-scraping measures. The amended complaint fills that gap with terms from Google's content licensing deals, including a Reddit agreement that Google says bars third parties from reselling licensed content. SerpApi is expected to move to dismiss again.

The Search Console generative AI report reached many more sites, but not all of them

Schwartz first reported the generative AI performance report as fully live, then corrected it. John Mueller confirmed on Reddit: "Correct, it's not yet every domain." It still shows impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates, and still no clicks and no queries.

Being recommended shows up as branded search, not as AI referral traffic

Seven weeks old and not covered here before, and it is the most useful thing in today's brief. A panel-based clickstream study of opted-in US desktop users, browsing data from July to December 2025 with a supplementary survey in January 2026. Users who received a ChatGPT brand recommendation were tracked for seven days; sessions where the user named the brand in the prompt were excluded, which is the design choice that makes it worth reading. Brands recommended in ChatGPT were 2.5x more likely to receive a site visit within seven days, and 55.9% of that traffic arrived via branded search rather than as a visible AI referral. AI-influenced visitors averaged 12.0 pages and 11.8 minutes per session against 6.5 pages and 5.6 minutes for everyone else.

Judge it honestly. US desktop only, no mobile, three verticals (finance, travel, beauty) and six large brands: American Express against Capital One, Skyscanner against Kayak, Sephora against Ulta. Nothing like a coach. Similarweb states the engagement figures are correlation, not causation, and neither write-up gives a panel size. We are citing it through two secondary sources, not the report itself.

Social citations, and YouTube overtaking Reddit

Within social sources, YouTube went from 28.8% in September to 39.2% in December while Reddit fell from 41.7% to 20.3%, though Reddit's absolute volume kept rising. Social overall reached 7.06% of non-competitor citations by November, up from 2.10% in September. Vendor-run, and the measurement window is now eight months old, so treat the direction as interesting and the levels as stale.
