Key Takeaways
- Treat a contradiction as a clue, not a glitch. When two assistants say opposite things about you, each one is usually quoting a real page. The disagreement tells you that two copies of your business exist and do not match.
- Sort the contradiction before you fix anything. A wrong fact, a claim that you do not exist, and a description of somebody else with your name are three different problems with three different fixes.
- Ask each tool three times before you believe the split. Answers move between runs. A contradiction that holds on every run points at a source; one that appears once is ordinary variation.
- Fix identity first, then existence, then facts. If an assistant has you confused with a same-name business, nothing you correct about your prices will reach the right record.
- Make your own site the reference copy. Every other copy is corrected by pointing at something. Your site is the one copy you can change today, so it has to say the true version plainly.
You ask ChatGPT about your own business and it says you work online only. You ask Gemini the same thing and it says you meet clients in person in Denver. One of those is true, and you stopped doing the other three years ago.
It is tempting to decide one of the tools is broken. Usually neither is. Each one is repeating something it read, accurately, from a page that really exists.
Here is why assistants disagree about your business, the three kinds of contradiction and what each one points to, and how to trace a disagreement back to the copy of you that needs fixing.
Why do two assistants give opposite answers about the same business?
Because each one read a different copy of you. Your business is described in many places, and when those descriptions disagree, one assistant can reach the current copy while another reaches an old one. The contradiction is not noise. It is a map to the copy that is wrong.
Think of the copies you have. Your own site. The profiles you claimed years ago. A directory listing somebody else wrote. A podcast page that quoted your price at the time. And, more often than people expect, a different business that happens to share your name.
Why the tools reach different pages in the first place, meaning what each one is allowed to read and whether it searches while you wait, is covered in why different AI tools give different answers. This post is about the narrower case: the answers are not just different lists, they contradict each other about you.
The three kinds of contradiction, and what each one points to
Contradictions come in three kinds: a fact that differs, a disagreement about whether you exist, and a description of somebody else under your name. Each one points to a different source problem, so sorting it is the first step, not the last.
A fact contradiction. One tool says online only, the other says in person. One quotes a price, the other says there is none. Two copies of you disagree, and usually one of them is older than the other.
An existence contradiction. One tool describes you and the other says it cannot find a business by that name, or describes you as closed. Either that tool cannot reach the pages that mention you, or it has matched your name to nothing.
An identity contradiction. One tool describes you and the other confidently describes a different business: another city, another specialty, the same name. Google's documentation on organization structured data says that adding it to your home page can help Google disambiguate your organization, and it lists a sameAs property for pointing at your profiles on other sites. That is the machine-readable half of telling the web which one you are.
-
Online sessions only
Your own site, updated 2026
Where sessions happen
Meets clients in person in Denver
A directory listing from 2022
-
Programs start at $1,500
A podcast guest page from 2024
What it costs
Pricing is not published
Your own services page, no price on it
-

Your own about page
Who the business is
A life coaching studio in Pennsylvania
A different business with the same name
The middle row is worth a second look, because the old copy is the more useful one. The podcast page states a price and your own site does not, so the tool that quoted $1,500 was giving the buyer more than your site would. Sometimes the fix for a contradiction is not correcting the other copy. It is making your own page say something.
| Kind of contradiction | Illustrative example | What it usually means | Where to look first |
|---|---|---|---|
| A fact differs | Online sessions only, against in person in Denver | Two copies of you disagree and one is older | Old directory listings and profiles you claimed years ago |
| A fact is missing on one side | Programs start at $1,500, against pricing not published | Another page states what your own site leaves out | Your own services page, then guest pages that quoted you |
| Existence | A full description, against no business found by that name | One tool cannot reach the pages that mention you | Whether your site blocks that tool, and whether any outside page names you |
| Identity | A career coach for engineers, against a life coaching studio in Pennsylvania | Your name has been matched to a different business | Search your exact business name with no city and read the first page of results |
Why the same web gives two answers
The same web gives two answers because the tools read it at different times and by different routes. One searches while you wait and reads the page as it is today. Another answers partly from what it learned earlier. A corrected page and an uncorrected memory of it can exist side by side for months.
A single question also reaches more pages than you would guess. Google's documentation on AI features in Search says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. A buyer's one question about you can therefore touch an old listing you forgot existed.
Timing does the rest. Google's page on asking Google to recrawl a page says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Until the page is read again, a search-grounded answer is quoting the version from before your fix. What a split result between two specific tools does and does not prove is set out in why Perplexity recommends you but ChatGPT does not.
One test separates a real contradiction from ordinary movement. Ask each tool the same question three times, in fresh chats. If the contradiction holds on all three runs, it is coming from a source. If it shows up once and then goes away, it is the variation every assistant has between runs, and there is nothing to trace.
How to trace a contradiction back to its source
Write down the exact claim each assistant made, ask each one where it got it, search for the claim's wording next to your name, and put a date on every copy you find. The copy that matches the wrong claim is the one to deal with.
Write the claim word for word. "Meets clients in person in Denver" is searchable. "It got my location wrong" is not.
Ask for the source. Tools that search while they answer can usually show you the pages they used. Ask the follow-up plainly: where did that come from?
Search the wording. Put the distinctive part of the claim in quotation marks with your business name and read every result. Old directories, association pages and guest bios turn up here.
Date every copy. A listing with a 2022 address and a site updated this year explains the whole contradiction in one line.
Here is the limit. An assistant answering from what it learned earlier often cannot tell you where a claim came from, and when asked it may offer a plausible page that is not the real source. If the claim appears nowhere you can find, the copy may no longer exist, and the only fix is making the true version easy to find and waiting for it to be read.
What to fix first
Fix identity first, then existence, then facts, and start every fix with your own site. A tool that has you confused with someone else cannot use a corrected price, and every other copy of you is easier to correct once your site states the true version plainly.
Identity. Put your city and your specialty next to your business name everywhere it appears: your site title, your profiles, your bios. Add organization markup to your home page with sameAs links to the profiles that are really yours. A same-name business with more coverage may still win the bare name, so the aim is to win the name plus what you do.
Existence. Check that your site does not block the tool that cannot find you, and get at least one outside page to describe you in plain words. A business only its own site mentions is easy to miss.
Facts. Correct the copies you control, which are your site and your claimed profiles, then ask the owners of the others. The order that works for stale details, and how long each kind of copy takes to change, is in how to fix an out-of-date picture of your business in AI answers.
The damaging admission: you can make every copy agree and still see the contradiction for a while. Answers drawn from what a model learned earlier do not update on your schedule, and nobody can tell you the date they will. What you can control is that every page a searching assistant reaches today says the same true thing.
To see what one assistant says about your niche right now, start with the free check. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it, and the report lands within the hour between 7am and 5pm Central, or by 10am the next morning outside those hours.
Questions we hear the most
Why do two AI assistants say opposite things about my business?
Because each one read a different copy of you. Your site, an old directory listing, a podcast page and a same-name business can all describe you differently, and each assistant quotes whichever copy it reached.
Which assistant is right when they disagree?
Neither, necessarily. Each is accurately repeating a source, and the source may be out of date. The useful question is which copy of your business is true today, and that is something only you can answer.
Can a contradiction come from a business with the same name as mine?
Yes, and it is the one worth fixing first. If an assistant attaches another business to your name, corrections to your own details may land on the wrong record. Put your city and specialty next to your name wherever it appears.
Is it just random variation between answers?
Test it before deciding. Ask each assistant the same question three times. If the contradiction holds on every run, it comes from a source. If it appears once and disappears, it is the ordinary movement between runs.
Will fixing my website make both assistants agree?
It helps the assistants that read your site live, once the page has been read again. It does less, and more slowly, for answers drawn from what a model learned earlier, and nothing for copies of you on other sites.
How long does a correction take to show up?
Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and a search-grounded answer cannot reflect a page before it is read again. Answers drawn from training can lag much longer than that.
