Why Didn't a Mention on a Trusted Site Change What AI Says About You?

A broad dark desktop card reader with a warm amber rim in a deep blue void, one blank dark glass card pushed halfway into its front slot and a long status strip beneath the slot left unlit

Key Takeaways

  • Check the mention before you blame the assistant. A mention has to be reachable, readable as text, clearly about you, specific about what you do, and read again since it went up. Failing any one of those is enough to change nothing.
  • Open the site's robots.txt first. A trusted site can still shut AI crawlers out. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, however good the page is.
  • Make sure your name is in the page text. A member list that loads by script, a name inside an image, or a guest bio in an embedded player may never be read as words at all.
  • Ask for one sentence that says what you do. Being one name in a list of eleven confirms you exist. It gives an assistant nothing to repeat when a buyer asks who helps with their specific problem.
  • Wait a quarter, then decide. Crawling alone can take a few days to a few weeks, and then the page has to be chosen over what was already used. A mention judged after a week has not had its chance.

You did the hard part. A site that AI assistants genuinely cite in your niche mentioned you by name. Two months later you ask the same buyer question you always ask, and the answer is exactly what it was before.

It is natural to conclude that mentions do not work. More often, this particular mention never had a chance, for a reason you could have spotted in ten minutes.

Here is why a mention did not change AI answers, the five checks every mention has to pass, how to test each one yourself, and how long to wait before deciding it failed.

Why did a mention on a trusted site change nothing?

Because a mention has to pass five checks before it can reach an answer, and it only takes one failure to stop it. The page must be reachable by the assistant, readable as text, clearly about you, specific about what you do, and read again since your name went up.

Trust belongs to the site. The checks belong to the page, and to the sentence about you on it. A publication an assistant cites every day can still carry your name on a page it cannot open, in a form it cannot read, or in a sentence that says nothing worth repeating.

How to find those sites and earn the mention in the first place is covered in how to get mentioned on sites AI already trusts. This post starts where that one ends: the mention exists, and nothing moved.

The five checks a mention has to pass

The five checks run in order: reachable, readable as text, clearly you, says what you do, and read again since. They work like lamps in a series. A mention that fails the first check never gets to the second, so the earliest failure is the only one worth fixing first.

ILLUSTRATIVE: FIVE MENTIONS, FIVE CHECKSONE BREAK STOPS THE REST
  1. A client's company blog

    1. Reachable
    2. Readable as text
    3. Clearly you
    4. Says what you do
    5. Read again since

Stops here: The site blocks AI crawlers

  2. An association member directory

    1. Reachable
    2. Readable as text
    3. Clearly you
    4. Says what you do
    5. Read again since

Stops here: The list loads by script

  3. A podcast episode page

    1. Reachable
    2. Readable as text
    3. Clearly you
    4. Says what you do
    5. Read again since

Stops here: Name misspelled in the notes

  4. A roundup of eleven coaches

    1. Reachable
    2. Readable as text
    3. Clearly you
    4. Says what you do
    5. Read again since

Stops here: Name listed, no description

  5. A local business journal interview

    1. Reachable
    2. Readable as text
    3. Clearly you
    4. Says what you do
    5. Read again since

Five illustrative mentions run through the same five checks. A client's company blog stops at the first, because the site blocks AI crawlers. An association directory stops at the second, because its member list loads by script. A podcast page stops at the third, with the name misspelled. A roundup of eleven coaches stops at the fourth, listing the name with no description. A local business journal interview passes all five.

Take the five illustrative mentions in the figure. The client's company blog never gets read, because the site blocks AI crawlers. The association directory is reachable, but its member list loads by script. The podcast page is readable, but it spells the name wrong. The roundup of eleven coaches gets the name right and describes nobody. Only the local business journal interview passes all five, and even that one is eligible to be used, not promised to be.

How to test each check yourself

Each check has a test you can run without any tools: read the site's robots.txt, view the page with scripts off or read its source, search the page for your exact name, read the sentence about you as a stranger would, and check when the page was published against when you asked.

The five checks a mention has to pass, what usually fails each one, and how to test it yourself (examples are illustrative)
Check What usually fails it How to test it yourself What you can do
Reachable The site blocks named AI crawlers in its robots.txt Add /robots.txt to the site's address and search for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot Little on that site. Get the same story told somewhere that is open
Readable as text A member list that loads by script, a name inside an image or an embedded player View the page source and search it for your name Ask for a plain text line with your name on the page itself
Clearly you A misspelled name, a different business name, or no detail tying the name to you Search the page for your name exactly as it appears on your own site Ask for the correct spelling plus your city or your site
Says what you do A name in a list, a thank-you, or a bio about your hobbies Read the sentence about you and ask what a buyer would learn from it Offer the host one sentence: who you help and with what
Read again since Your name went up recently, or the page was edited after it was last read Compare the date your name appeared with the date you checked the answer Wait, and check again a quarter after it went up

Reachable. OpenAI's documentation on its crawlers says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. It also says each setting is independent, so a site can block one crawler and allow another. Read the file, do not assume.

Readable as text. Google's JavaScript basics for Search describe three phases, crawling, rendering and indexing, and say Googlebot queues pages for both crawling and rendering. A name that only appears once scripts have run depends on the second queue. A name written in the page itself does not.

Clearly you and says what you do. These two fail most often and are the easiest to fix, because a host who was happy to mention you is usually happy to correct a spelling or add a line.

How long to wait before calling it

Wait a full quarter from the day the mention went up before deciding it did nothing. A page has to be read again after your name appears, and then chosen over whatever was already being used for your question. Neither step happens on a schedule you can see.

Google's page on asking Google to recrawl a page says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and you cannot request it for a site you do not manage. That is only the first step, and it is the one with a published range.

Podcast and interview mentions have their own version of this problem, because the useful part is often audio. What to ask a host for before you record so that something readable is left behind is in how to make your podcast and webinar appearances count.

What to do with a mention that failed

Fix the earliest check it failed, if the site owner will let you, and put a readable record of the mention on your own site either way. If it failed the first check, stop spending effort on that site and take the same story somewhere open.

Ask for a small edit. A corrected spelling, your city after your name, or one sentence saying who you help. Small edits get made. Rewrites do not.

Keep a copy you own. On your own site, write one plain sentence per mention: where it appeared, when, and what it said about your work, with a link. A row of publication logos does not say any of that.

Check the site is cited for your question. A site an assistant trusts for one kind of question may never come up for yours. The method for finding which sites are actually cited for your niche's questions is in how to find out which websites AI cites in your niche.

The damaging admission: some mentions pass all five checks and still change nothing, and neither you nor we can see why from outside. The assistant may already have enough sources for that question, or a competitor may be described more specifically in the same places. A mention makes you eligible. It never obliges anyone to use it, and anyone selling mentions as a guaranteed change in answers is selling something they cannot see either.

To see whether you are named for your niche's questions today, start with the free check. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it, and the report lands within the hour between 7am and 5pm Central, or by 10am the next morning outside those hours.

Questions we hear the most

Why did a mention on a trusted site not change what AI says about me?

Usually because it failed one of five checks. The page has to be reachable by the assistant, readable as text, clearly about you, specific about what you do, and read again since your name appeared.

How long after a mention should AI answers change?

Give it a quarter before judging. Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and after that the page still has to be chosen over the sources already being used for your question.

Can AI read a mention that loads with JavaScript?

Sometimes, and it is the riskiest form a mention can take. Google describes rendering JavaScript as its own queued step after crawling. A name that is present in the page text from the start does not depend on that step.

What if the site that mentioned me blocks AI crawlers?

Then that assistant cannot use the page by crawling it, however much it trusts the site. You can check in two minutes by opening the site's robots.txt file and searching for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.

Does a nofollow link stop AI from reading a mention?

Not by itself. A nofollow attribute qualifies the link, not the words around it. Whether the sentence about you can be read depends on crawler access and on the words actually being in the page.

Should I put press mentions on my own website?

Yes, as text. Write one sentence per mention saying where it appeared, when, and what it said about your work, and link to it. A row of publication logos says nothing an assistant can read.

Will the AnswerHalo free check show whether a mention is working?

Only the result. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a readout within the hour showing whether you are named and who is named instead. It does not trace which page an answer used.

Does the AnswerHalo audit show which sites the answers drew on?

Yes. It shows the pages the answers actually drew on, ranked by how often, across five AI tools, and includes a technical pack on whether your own site can be crawled and rendered. It lands in your inbox by this time tomorrow.
