Key Takeaways
- Check that your site is not switched out of Google's AI answers. Every site now has a Search Console setting that removes it from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Nothing on the outside shows it, so ask whoever set up your site.
- Read Google's new AI report for what it is. It counts how often your pages were shown in AI answers, with no clicks, no answer text and no competitor names. It is a useful count, not an explanation.
- Expect the answer to move when you did nothing. This quarter a source vanished from ChatGPT in one day and a Google model dropped its citations for a day and a half. Re-run the same questions before blaming your own pages.
- Ignore the ad and retail news unless you sell products. Several of the quarter's loudest changes need a product feed or ad inventory. A coach has neither, and none of it touches how a coaching business gets named.
- Keep doing the one thing that did not change. Pages that state a specific answer in plain sentences are still what gets quoted. Google said this quarter that there is nothing special to do for its AI answers, and it meant exactly that.
A lot happened in AI search between July and the middle of September 2026. Most of it was written for people who sell products, run ads or publish news, and very little of it was written for a coach or consultant trying to work out whether any of it matters to them.
Some of it does. Three changes affect how a coaching business gets found, one needs a two-minute check on your own site, and the rest can be safely read as background.
This is a dated snapshot, covering July 1 to September 11, 2026. Every item is sourced below, and each one says plainly whether it is about you.
What changed in AI search this quarter?
Google gave every website a setting to leave its AI answers and a report counting AI impressions, and it kept turning more of its results page into AI answers. Separately, answers moved for businesses that changed nothing at all. Most of the remaining news was new models and ad tools.

Google turned more of the page into answers, and gave sites a setting
Three Google changes matter: every site can now opt out of the AI answers, every site can now count its AI impressions, and the AI answers themselves grew. The first one is the one to check today.
The opt-out setting. Google's Search Console help page describes a property-level setting that excludes a site's content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. The page says it reached all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. Google states that it does not affect ranking elsewhere in Search, and that an excluded site gets no traffic or impressions from those features. For a coach there is almost no reason to use it and one good reason to look: if a previous web developer or agency switched it off, your site is invisible on Google's AI surfaces and no amount of good writing will change that.
The AI impressions report. Shipped alongside it, the generative AI performance report counts how often your pages were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It has no click data, and it combines the two surfaces into one number. It will tell you your pages appeared. It will not tell you what the answer said, whether a competitor was named in the same answer, or anything about the assistants Google does not run.
The answer got bigger. Google confirmed in late August that for some queries, AI Overviews now open at full length rather than behind a "show more" button, which pushes the ordinary results further down. And by the first week of September, AlsoAsked, which tracks a large panel of queries, reported that about 97 percent of People Also Ask answers were AI Overviews, up from 86 percent in August. People Also Ask was one of the last places on the page where a written question came back with a plain link. Google has not commented on the figure, and it comes from a tracked panel rather than a random sample of searches.
The direction is consistent with what we have been describing since the summer in why "just Google it" is disappearing: the answer is growing into the space the links used to occupy, and the thing worth holding is being named inside it.
Answers moved without anyone touching a website
Twice this quarter, what an assistant said shifted for reasons that had nothing to do with any business being described. Both are reasons to re-run the same questions before reading anything into a change in your own results.
The first was measured, with a caveat. Promptwatch, which tracks citations across several assistants, reported that Reddit went from about 3.8 percent of ChatGPT's citations in late July to about 0.5 percent from August 14, a fall of roughly 86 percent in a single day. OpenAI said nothing. Promptwatch itself says a data-collection problem cannot be ruled out and that the size of the drop should be treated as provisional. The lesson does not depend on the exact size: a business whose reputation lived mostly in Reddit threads could have been named on August 13 and missing on August 14, having changed nothing.
The second was confirmed by Google. In early September, Gemini 3.8 Flash in AI Mode was answering with almost no links or citations. A Google Search product vice president acknowledged publicly that it was not working as intended, and links were back within about a day and a half. It only reached paying subscribers who had picked that model. Anyone who checked their visibility on that model on that day would have concluded the assistants did not know they existed.
The same week, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, rolling out to paid ChatGPT plans and developers. OpenAI's announcement is about capability and says nothing about how ChatGPT chooses or credits sources, so there is no specific instruction to take from it, beyond noting that the software behind the answers changed again.
What sounded big and mostly is not about you
Several of the quarter's loudest stories need a product feed, ad inventory or a news operation, and a coaching practice has none of those. They are real, and they are not your problem.
ChatGPT's advertising tools expanded in August for advertisers with product feeds, and sponsored product carousels were spotted in some answers. Google began showing retailers, through Merchant Center, the actual questions shoppers ask its AI. Cloudflare announced on July 1 that from September 15, new domains on its network would block training and agent crawlers by default, but only on pages that display ads, which almost no coaching site does.
Two stories sit in between. Google ran its August spam update under spam policies that its documentation says cover attempts to manipulate its generative AI answers as well as its rankings. That matters only if someone offers to sell you placed mentions or links, in which case it is a reason to say no. And on August 31 the European Commission designated ChatGPT a very large online search engine under the Digital Services Act, because it answers questions partly by searching the web. It changes nothing about how you get named. It does settle, in a regulator's own words, whether people really use ChatGPT as a search engine.
What did not change, and what to watch next
The mechanism did not change. Pages that state a specific answer in plain sentences, and are described consistently elsewhere, are still what gets quoted and named. Google's own John Mueller said in late August that there is nothing special a site needs to do for Google's AI answers, and for Google specifically that is fair.
It is only a statement about Google, though. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot do not run on Google's index, and a business can rank well and still be absent from their answers. Which of those your buyers actually use is covered in which AI assistant clients use, and how Google picks the pages behind its own answers is in how AI Overviews choose their sources.
Three things to watch next quarter. Apple's rebuilt Siri ships with iOS 27 on September 14, into an assistant Apple says handles more than 2.5 billion requests a day, and nobody yet knows whether it names businesses from the web or shows sources. Whether Google's AI impressions report ever splits AI Overviews from AI Mode. And whether the ChatGPT citation shifts of August settle or keep moving.
The practical step is the same one it was last quarter: ask the same buyer questions again and compare. The free check asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it, and the report lands within the hour between 7am and 5pm Central, or by 10am the next morning outside those hours. Keep it, and you have a dated baseline to hold next quarter's news against.
Questions we hear the most
What changed in AI search this quarter?
Google gave every website a setting to leave its AI answers and a report counting AI impressions, and turned more of its results page into AI answers. Answers also moved for businesses that changed nothing. Most of the rest was new models and ad tools that do not touch a coach.
Can I opt my website out of Google's AI Overviews now?
Yes. Since August 31, 2026 every site can use a Search Console setting to exclude its content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. Google says it does not affect ordinary rankings, but excluded sites get no traffic from those features.
Should a coach turn that setting off?
Almost never. Excluding your site removes you from the answers your buyers are reading and does nothing for your ordinary ranking. The useful move is checking it has not already been switched off by a previous web developer, because nothing on the outside tells you.
Does Google now show how often I appear in AI answers?
Partly. The generative AI performance report in Search Console counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, combined into one figure, with no clicks and no answer text. It tells you your pages were shown, not what was said or who else was named.
Why did my business drop out of ChatGPT answers when I changed nothing?
Because the sources an assistant draws on shift underneath you. This quarter one tracker measured ChatGPT's citations to Reddit falling by about 86 percent in a single day, unannounced. Re-run the same questions before concluding anything about your own pages.
Does the new Siri recommend businesses?
Nobody knows yet. Apple's rebuilt Siri ships with iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, and Apple has not said whether it names businesses from the web or shows its sources. Test it with your own buyer questions once it arrives.
How do I check whether any of this changed my own visibility?
Ask the same buyer questions you asked last quarter and compare who gets named. The AnswerHalo free check runs 25 real buyer questions through ChatGPT at $0 and emails the report within the hour, which gives you a dated baseline for next quarter.
What does the $500 audit add after a quarter like this?
It reads five AI tools instead of one, including Google's AI answers, across 125 checks, and records who was named on each question. It arrives by this time tomorrow, so you can see which of these changes actually reached your market.
Your buyers are already asking. Find out what AI tells them.
The free check asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions about your niche and sends you the report within the hour, at $0. If it shows you are already getting named everywhere, we will say so in plain words.
