Key Takeaways
- Stop asking whether the page gets read. Assistants work in passages, not pages. The useful question is whether any single question and answer on your page still makes sense with everything around it removed.
- Word each question the way a buyer would type it. What is your process is a heading nobody searches. How long does career coaching take is a question people actually ask, and it is the version that can match one.
- Kill every pronoun that points off the page. It, that, the above package, as I mentioned. Each one turns a quotable answer into a fragment, because the thing it referred to does not travel with it.
- Do not expect a rich result from FAQ markup. Google restricted FAQ rich results to well-known authoritative government and health sites in 2023. The markup is still fine to have, but it is not a visibility strategy.
- Repeat the specifics inside each answer. Saying the package name and the price again in the answer feels redundant to a human reader and is exactly what makes the passage usable on its own.
You built an FAQ page. It has twelve questions, a tidy accordion, and the markup somebody told you to add. Since then it has done nothing you can point to.
Do AI assistants read your FAQ page? They read parts of it, which is not the same thing and changes what you should do about it. An assistant does not consume your page and form an impression. It lifts one question and one answer out and uses that.
Here is the short answer, why passages beat pages, which of your answers survive being lifted out, what happens to each kind of entry, and how to rewrite the page in an afternoon.
Do AI assistants read your FAQ page?
Yes, in the sense that the text is readable material like any other text on your site. No, in the sense that being an FAQ page gives it no special standing. The format is not the thing that helps you.
It is worth being clear about a claim that circulates widely. Adding FAQ markup does not make Google show your questions in search results, and has not for years. Google's own post on changes to HowTo and FAQ rich results from August 2023 says that FAQ rich results are shown only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and that for all other sites the rich result no longer appears regularly.
That same post says there is no need to remove the structured data, and unused structured data does not cause problems. So keep it if you have it. Just stop expecting it to do a job it was retired from. Schema.org still defines FAQPage as a type, and describing your page accurately remains reasonable practice.
Why passages beat pages
An assistant builds an answer out of specific passages, so the unit that matters is one question and its answer, not the page holding them. Your page is a container, and containers do not get quoted.
This is why a good FAQ page can produce nothing. Twelve well-written answers that each depend on the eleven around them give an assistant twelve fragments. One plain answer that repeats its own subject gives it something usable.
Google's documentation on AI features in Search sets the mechanical floor for the Google side: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can support an AI Overview or AI Mode answer. Snippet eligibility is a passage-level idea, and it rewards the same writing. The broader question of which pages get quoted at all is covered in what kinds of pages AI assistants quote most.
Which of your answers survive being lifted out
Take each entry, remove the rest of the page, and read what is left. The ones that still make sense are the ones that can be quoted.
- What is your process? It runs over six sessions, as I described above. BREAKS WHEN LIFTED
- How much does career coaching cost? A full six-session career coaching package costs $1,800, illustrative for this example. STANDS ALONE
- How long does it take? Most clients finish it in about three months. BREAKS WHEN LIFTED
- Do you work with people leaving teaching? Yes. About half the people I coach are teachers moving into other fields. STANDS ALONE
- Is that included? Yes, the second one includes it at no extra charge. BREAKS WHEN LIFTED
- Are sessions online or in person? All sessions run online over video, from anywhere in the United States. STANDS ALONE
- What if I need to reschedule? You can move any session with 24 hours notice, at no charge. STANDS ALONE
- Can I do the shorter one instead? Yes, though most people find the longer option suits them better. BREAKS WHEN LIFTED
Four of the eight entries survive on their own. In the other four, the marked words point at something that did not come with them: it, as I described above, the second one, the longer option. Every marked word is a place the answer stops being an answer.
The coach above is illustrative and the eight entries are an example rather than a measurement, including the $1,800 package price. The reading is the real part: the split is not between good writing and bad writing. All eight sentences are perfectly clear on the page. Four of them stop being clear the moment they travel.
This is the single most common thing we see on FAQ pages that are doing nothing. Not thin answers, and not missing markup. Answers written as part of a conversation with the page above them.
What happens to each kind of entry
Sort your entries by what an assistant can actually do with them. The table below is that sort order, worst to best.
| How the entry is written | Example opening | Quotable alone? | What it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answer opens with a pronoun | It runs over six sessions | No | Name the thing the pronoun replaced |
| Answer refers to another entry | As I mentioned above | No | Restate the point instead of pointing at it |
| Question is internal jargon | What is your process? | Technically, but nothing matches it | Rewording to the question buyers type |
| Answer is a single word | Yes. | No | One sentence that restates the question |
| Answer states its own subject | A six-session career coaching package costs | Yes | Nothing, this is the target |
| Answer includes the constraint | All sessions run online over video | Yes, and it matches narrow questions | Nothing, this is the best case |
The fourth row is worth dwelling on, because it looks like good writing. A crisp Yes under a clear question reads well and extracts to nothing at all. The related habit of answering real client questions in the place they belong is covered in answering common client questions on one page.
How to rewrite an FAQ page in an afternoon
Go through the page twice. Once for the questions, once for the first sentence of every answer. That is the entire job and it takes about two hours.
First pass, the questions: replace every heading that is your language with the wording a buyer would use. What is your process becomes how long does career coaching take. What are your rates becomes how much does career coaching cost. You are not being clever, you are matching what somebody types.
Second pass, the answers: make the first sentence of each one repeat its own subject, in full, as if it were the only sentence anybody would ever see. It will feel repetitive reading top to bottom. That feeling is the cost, and it buys every answer the ability to travel. The same discipline applied to a services page is covered in how to write a services page AI can quote.
The damaging admission: a rewritten FAQ page will not fix a business that assistants have never heard of. If nothing independent describes you anywhere, the best-written answers in your niche are still a single self-published source, and that is a different problem with a slower fix. FAQ work pays when you are already being found and then described vaguely.
If you want to know which of those you are, start with the free check. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it, and the report lands within the hour between 7am and 5pm Central, or by 10am the next morning outside those hours.
Questions we hear the most
Do AI assistants read your FAQ page?
They read passages on it rather than the page as a whole. An assistant pulls one question and its answer, so what matters is whether that single pair still makes sense with the rest of the page removed.
Is FAQ schema markup still worth adding?
It is fine to have and it will not hurt you. Google restricted FAQ rich results to well-known authoritative government and health websites in 2023, so treat the markup as tidy structure rather than a route to visibility.
Should my FAQ be on one page or spread across the site?
Either works, because assistants quote passages either way. Putting a question on the page it belongs to often reads better for humans, and human readability and machine readability point the same direction here.
Why does AI quote my competitor’s FAQ and not mine?
Usually because their answers stand alone and yours refer backwards. An answer beginning with it or that package cannot be lifted out, so it gets passed over in favor of one that can.
Do accordions and hidden text stop AI from reading my answers?
Not usually, if the text is in the page source rather than loaded only on click. The bigger risk is that collapsed answers tend to be written as short fragments that depend on the question above them.
How many questions should an FAQ page have?
Enough to cover what buyers actually ask, which is usually six to twelve. Padding the list with questions nobody asks adds nothing, because an unasked question never matches anything.
How do I find out which of my questions AI can answer about me?
Run the free check. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails you a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it.
Does the $500 audit tell me which page to fix first?
Yes. The $500 audit runs 125 checks across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews and ends with the page that wins your worst question, specified section by section. It lands by this time tomorrow.
Your buyers are already asking. Find out what AI tells them.
The free check asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions about your niche and sends you the report within the hour, at $0. If it shows you are already getting named everywhere, we will say so in plain words.
