Are AI Answers Personalized? What Two People Asking the Same Thing See

Two upright answer cards of dark smoked glass side by side on a low rail in a deep blue void, the left card with four blank rows glowing warm amber and the right card with the same top three rows lit and its bottom row dark

Key Takeaways

  • Expect the answer to shift a little, not completely. Two people asking the same thing usually see an overlapping set of names, in a different order, with one or two changes at the edges.
  • Know the four things that personalize an answer. The exact words typed, the asker's approximate location, what the assistant remembers about them, and plain run-to-run variation.
  • Remember that location is on by default. OpenAI says ChatGPT collects general location information from the IP address, so a buyer in Denver and a buyer in Austin are asking different questions without knowing it.
  • Stop worrying about the buyer's memory settings. You cannot see or change them. What you can change is the material every assistant reads, whoever is asking.
  • Judge your visibility on many questions, not one chat. A single screenshot from one account tells you what one person saw once. A repeated set of questions tells you where you stand.

You ask ChatGPT for the best leadership coach in your city and your name is not there. A friend asks the same thing on their phone and sends a screenshot with you in third place. Which one is the real answer?

Are AI answers personalized? Partly. The words typed, the asker's approximate location, what the assistant remembers about them, and ordinary run-to-run variation all change the answer. What the assistant reads about your business is the same for everyone.

Below are the four things that personalize an AI answer, a worked example of two people asking the same question, what stays fixed no matter who asks, and what that means for how you judge your own visibility.

Are AI answers personalized?

AI answers are personalized at the edges and shared at the core. Two people asking the same question usually see many of the same names, in a different order, with one or two names changing. They rarely see two completely different lists.

That is different from the way most people imagine it. Personalization does not mean each buyer gets a private answer built from scratch. It means the same pool of material gets searched with slightly different words, from a slightly different place, and summarized fresh each time.

Some of that variation has nothing to do with the person at all. The same question asked twice by the same person can return a different list, which is covered in why different AI tools give different answers. Personalization sits on top of that.

The four things that change the answer

Four things change an AI answer from one asker to the next: the exact words, the location, the assistant's memory of the person, and normal variation between runs. Only the first is visible to the asker, and none is visible to you.

What personalizes an AI answer about local or niche businesses, what each one changes, and whether the business can influence it.
What differs between askers How it gets in What it tends to change Can the business influence it?
The exact words Typed by the asker Which kind of business gets searched for at all Indirectly, by describing your work in the words buyers use
Approximate location Read from the IP address by default Which local businesses are in the pool Indirectly, by stating clearly where you work and whom you serve
Memory of the asker Saved details, past chats, custom instructions The searches the assistant runs on the asker's behalf No
Run-to-run variation Each answer is written fresh Order, and the names at the edges of the list No, but being well described makes you steadier
Which assistant or mode The asker's choice of tool Which sources are read and how many names are given Indirectly, by being present where each tool reads

Location is the one most people miss. OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT says ChatGPT "collects general location information based on your IP address" and may share that general location with search providers to improve results. Sharing a precise device location is optional and off by default. How much the city alone moves an answer is covered in do AI answers change by location.

Memory is the second. The same OpenAI page says: "If memory is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant saved memories when rewriting a search query." Its own example is a person who has said they are vegan and live in San Francisco, whose request for nearby restaurants becomes a search for vegan restaurants in San Francisco. A buyer who once told ChatGPT they run a small agency may get coaches who work with agencies, without typing the word.

OpenAI's page on memory in ChatGPT adds that memory "does not retain every detail from every conversation" and that ChatGPT decides which available information is relevant to a response. So memory does not always change the answer. It changes it when a remembered detail touches the question.

Two people, one question: what overlaps

When two people ask the same question, the answers usually overlap more than they differ. The figure shows a made-up example: two people in Denver ask the same assistant for a leadership coach on the same morning, and each gets five names back.

ILLUSTRATIVE: MADE-UP ANSWERSSAME QUESTION, TWO ASKERS

"Who is the best leadership coach in Denver?"

Person 1Memory off

  1. 1 Coach A In both
  2. 2 Coach B In both
  3. 3 Coach C In both
  4. 4 Coach D Only here
  5. 5 Coach E Only here

Person 2Memory on, has mentioned running an agency

  1. 1 Coach A In both
  2. 2 Coach C In both
  3. 3 Coach F Only here
  4. 4 Coach B In both
  5. 5 Coach G Only here
Named in both answers
3 of 5
Same first name
Yes
Named in only one
2 each

Three of the five coaches appear in both answers, and the first name is the same. The order and the last places changed.

A made-up example of two people in Denver asking an assistant the same question. Person 1 gets Coach A, Coach B, Coach C, Coach D and Coach E. Person 2 gets Coach A, Coach C, Coach F, Coach B and Coach G. Coaches A, B and C appear in both answers; Coach A is first in both.

The answers, the coaches and the overlap are illustrative, not measured. Real overlap varies with the question, the city and the tool. The shape is the useful part: a core of names that survives the change of asker, and an edge that moves.

That shape tells you where you want to be. A business in the core shows up for most people who ask. A business at the edge shows up for some people, some of the time, which is why one friend's screenshot can include you while your own search does not.

What stays the same for every asker

What stays the same is the material the assistant reads. Your website, your profiles, your reviews and what other sites say about you look identical whoever is asking. Personalization changes which of that material gets searched for and how it is summarized.

The fan-out of searches behind an answer is where that shared material gets picked up. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. Different askers set off slightly different searches, but they are searching the same web.

So a business that is described clearly in many places gets picked up by many versions of the search. A business described in one place, in words buyers do not use, gets picked up only when the search happens to land there. That is the real reason two people see you differently: not because the assistant knows them, but because your description only matches some of the searches.

What this means for a coach or consultant

For a coach or consultant, personalization means one screenshot proves very little. Judge your visibility by asking many likely questions, repeating them over time, and watching whether you move toward the core of the list.

  1. Collect the questions, not the screenshots. Write down ten to twenty questions your buyers would type, in their words.
  2. Repeat them. Ask the same set again a week or a month later, the same way each time. How often to repeat is covered in how many times to check AI visibility.
  3. Count, do not rank. How many of the questions name you at all matters more than your position in any single answer.
  4. Fix the shared material. Say plainly what you do, for whom, and where, on your site and on the profiles assistants read.

The damaging admission: no test you run shows what a specific buyer saw. Their memory, their wording and their timing are invisible to you, and anyone who claims to show you "your rank in ChatGPT" is showing one sample. A repeated set of questions is still a sample. It is a much better one.

To start with a pattern rather than a screenshot, start with the free check. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it, and the report lands within the hour between 7am and 5pm Central, or by 10am the next morning outside those hours.

Questions we hear the most

Are AI answers personalized?

Partly. The words typed, the asker's approximate location, what the assistant remembers about them, and ordinary run-to-run variation all change the answer. The pages and profiles the assistant reads about your business are the same for everyone.

Do two people get the same answer from ChatGPT?

Usually not word for word. Two people asking the same question tend to see an overlapping set of names in a different order, with one or two names changing, because location, memory and normal variation all differ between them.

Does ChatGPT know where I am when I ask for a recommendation?

Roughly, yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT collects general location information based on your IP address and may use it for local results. Sharing your precise device location is optional and off by default.

Does ChatGPT memory change which businesses it recommends?

It can. OpenAI says that if memory is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant saved memories when rewriting a search query, so a remembered detail like a city or a preference can change what gets searched for.

Can a business see what a specific buyer was shown?

No. The answer depends on that buyer's words, location, memory and timing, none of which you can see. You can only test a set of likely questions yourself and repeat them, which shows the pattern rather than any one person's screen.

Does the AnswerHalo free check account for personalization?

It works around it by asking many questions instead of one. The free check asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche, so the result is a pattern across questions, not one chat. It cannot show what a particular buyer sees in their own account.

What does the AnswerHalo free check include?

The free check asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it.

What does AnswerHalo cost after the free check?

The full audit is $500 once and runs 125 checks across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, landing by this time tomorrow. Ongoing watching is $399 a month, or $300 a month added with the audit.
