AI Search Statistics for Service Businesses: What the 2026 Numbers Say

Key Takeaways

  • Read the base before the number. The big 2026 AI search statistics count different things: U.S. adults, surveyed consumers, or Google sessions. Two figures near 50% are not the same half.
  • Plan for half of adults using chatbots. Pew Research Center found 49% of U.S. adults use AI chatbots in February 2026, up from 33% in 2024, and 24% use one every day.
  • Count the AI summary as the bigger door. In the same survey, 60% of U.S. adults said they read the AI summaries at the top of search results, more than use any chatbot.
  • Expect buyers to ask AI about businesses directly. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 U.S. consumers found 45% had used AI tools for a local business recommendation in the past year.
  • Distrust any figure for your own clients. No public study measures how many people ask AI before hiring a coach or consultant. A vendor quoting one is guessing, and your own check beats their guess.

Every AI search statistic you read this year seems to say "about half." Half of adults use chatbots. Nearly half of searches end without a click. Nearly half of consumers have asked AI to recommend a business. They are not the same half.

What do the AI search statistics for 2026 actually say? About half of U.S. adults use AI chatbots, 60% read the AI summaries in search results, and 45% of consumers in one survey have asked AI for a local business recommendation. Each number counts a different group.

Below are the numbers worth knowing, where each one comes from, what it is counted out of, and the one statistic a service business really wants that nobody has published.

AI search statistics for 2026, in short

The AI search statistics for 2026 that hold up come from three sources: Pew Research Center for how many adults use AI, BrightLocal for how many consumers ask AI about businesses, and iPullRank for what happens to clicks on Google. Everything else you see quoted usually traces back to one of these or to a vendor's own sample.

The last row is the one that matters most to a coach or consultant, and it is empty. That is not an oversight in this post. It is the state of the research, covered in more depth in how many clients ask AI before visiting your website.

How many people use AI chatbots and AI search

About half of U.S. adults use AI chatbots, and more than half read AI summaries in search. Pew Research Center surveyed 5,119 U.S. adults from February 17 to 23, 2026, and found 49% use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024, with 24% using one every day.

ChatGPT leads by a wide margin: 44% of U.S. adults said they use it, up from 34% a year earlier. And 42% of all adults said they use chatbots to search for information, which is the use that can end with your name in an answer. All of these are in Pew's report, Americans and AI in 2026.

The larger number is the AI summary. Pew found 60% of U.S. adults say they read the AI summaries at the top of search results. Pew's breakdown by age puts that at 72% of adults under 30 and 38% of those 65 and older, against chatbot use of 66% and 23% in the same groups. For older buyers especially, AI arrives inside a normal search rather than a chatbot.

Which of these tools your own buyers favor is a separate question, taken up in which AI assistant do clients use.

How many people ask AI to recommend a business

In one 2026 survey, 45% of U.S. consumers said they had used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past year. The source is BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, a panel of 1,002 U.S. adults, published in March 2026.

ChatGPT was the most used tool for this at 31%, followed by Google's AI Mode at 23%. Adults 30 to 44 led, with 64% having asked AI for a business recommendation in the past year, while just 24% of adults over 60 had.

Trust is high among the people who use it and so is checking. Of the 455 consumers who had used AI for recommendations, 63% said they trust them and 10% said they do not. Yet 97% said they sometimes double-check against real reviews. BrightLocal studies local businesses, not coaches and consultants, so read it as the direction of travel rather than a figure for your niche.

What happens to clicks when the answer is on the page

Fewer people click through when the answer is already on the results page. A clickstream study by iPullRank, using the Datos panel of 9.1 million people, found that 46.96% of 10.2 billion Google sessions ended with no click on any result, between October 2024 and December 2025.

The same study found only about 14% of Google clicks went to a site the searcher had named. The rest were discovery. Its stated limits matter: the panel is 94.5% desktop, it cannot measure across devices, and it cannot say how much of the change came from AI Overviews specifically. The longer read is in half of searches end without a click.

The figure below sets the four headline numbers side by side, each with what it is counted out of.

Four 2026 figures near half, and what each one counts

  1. Use AI chatbots 49% U.S. adultsPew, Feb 2026
  2. Read AI summaries in search results 60% U.S. adultsPew, Feb 2026
  3. Asked AI tools for a local business recommendation 45% U.S. consumers surveyedBrightLocal, 2026
  4. Google sessions that ended with no click 46.96% Google sessions, not peopleiPullRank, Oct 2024 to Dec 2025

The thin line on each track marks 50%

All four sit near half. Three count people and one counts Google sessions, and none of them counts your clients.

Use AI chatbots: 49% of U.S. adults (Pew, February 2026). Read AI summaries in search results: 60% of U.S. adults (Pew, February 2026). Asked AI tools for a local business recommendation in the past year: 45% of 1,002 U.S. consumers (BrightLocal, 2026). Google sessions ending with no click: 46.96% of 10.2 billion sessions (iPullRank, October 2024 to December 2025).

What the 2026 numbers do not tell a service business

The 2026 numbers do not tell a service business how many of its own buyers ask AI first, which questions they ask, or whether it gets named. They describe adults in general, consumers looking for local businesses, and Google sessions. A coach or consultant sits inside all three groups and is measured by none of them.

  • Different bases. A share of adults and a share of searches cannot be added or compared directly. Check what each figure is counted out of before you repeat it.
  • Different questions. "Ever used" is a low bar that includes someone who tried a chatbot twice. Daily use, at 24%, is the sturdier figure.
  • Different samples. Pew's panel is built to represent U.S. adults. BrightLocal's is a consumer panel about local businesses. iPullRank's skews desktop. None is about your niche.

The damaging admission: no statistic in this post proves you are losing clients to AI. They show the habit is common and growing. Whether it reaches your business is something you can check directly, by asking the questions your buyers ask and counting the names.

That is what the free check does. It asks ChatGPT 25 real buyer questions from your niche at $0 and emails a plain-English readout: your score, who got named in your place, and the one fix to start with. It runs as soon as you ask for it, and the report lands within the hour between 7am and 5pm Central, or by 10am the next morning outside those hours.
